CV NEWS FEED // The Catholic Church’s apostolate for those who work at sea, Stella Maris, has set May 22 as the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea in the US.
“On National Maritime Day, we thank our brothers and sisters who work as seafarers for their dedication,” said Diocese of Victoria, Texas, Bishop Brendan J. Cahill, who promotes Stella Maris in the US, according to a press release from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). “We also seek the intercession of Our Lady, Star of the Sea — that she protect and guide those in this important industry that is vital to global commerce.”
He will offer a votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of the Sea, at 12:10 p.m. May 24 in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception’s crypt church.
He encourages dioceses to remember seafarers in Masses on May 22 and to host events thanking, supporting, and raising awareness for those who work in the maritime industry.
Maritime workers include merchants, sailors, seafarers, fishermen, and port personnel, the release explains. These workers ensure the transportation of raw materials, food, and medicines around the globe.
“The nature of maritime work means they are not always a visible presence in the community, and seafarers make great sacrifices with their families to carry out their work,” the release adds. “Stella Maris chaplains, deacons, and lay ministers serve at ports across the United States to welcome them and be a network of support for them and their families.”
Pope Francis also recognized the contributions of maritime workers. For the Jubilee Year 2025, he appointed the Italian naval ship Amerigo Vespucci as a jubilee pilgrimage site, giving those working at sea an opportunity to participate.
